Contact: Louise Pickford - Ext: 7355; e-mail: [email protected]

1 Summary

Applications have been received from people in Hampshire undertaking projects for personal development. These grants, if awarded, would support Aim 1 of the Corporate Strategy by maximising life opportunities. Applicants' details are as follows:-

1.1 Nicholas Jolliffe, Longparish

Nicholas (16) has been chosen by his scout group to take part in a school building project in Kamuli, Uganda between 30 July and 24 August. The aim is to provide a teaching block with two classrooms and accommodation for the teacher who will stay overnight instead of travelling great distances from their homes. The Expedition will also involve several other recreational activities for the scouts involved. The cost of this trip is estimated to be £1,800 and so far Nicholas has managed to raise £965. He has many other events planned before his departure.

    Recommendation: £150

1.2 Timothy Slade, Petersfield

Timothy (23) is currently studying medicine at the University of Bristol and will be entering his final year in September. Between 4 September and 27 October, he is planning to undertake a medical elective in Dehli at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). His intended topics for further experience during this period are: paediatrics, neurosurgery and infectious disease which will provide him with a broadened preparation for his finals and future career. The cost of the elective is estimated at £1,500.

The following comments have been received from the Student Support Unit: "There are no specific grants for such placements. Students who undertake study abroad in any subject remain entitled to their student support and if the placement is over 10 weeks in length then the student can receive a higher rate of loan. Students can also receive help towards the travel costs of their elective, if over 10 weeks, however this support is income-assessed."

Since 2000, only three applicants have been considered for a grant from this budget towards electives and of these only two were successful.
