SCHOOL TERM AND HOLIDAY DATES 2007/08

1. The Executive Member for Education has considered the proposed pattern of school term and holiday dates for 2007/08 after full consultations with teachers' professional associations both at a local and a national level . All schools also had the opportunity to comment on the proposed dates and the position in neighbouring authorities was taken into account.

2. The school term and holiday dates for 2007/08 adopted by the Executive Member are set out in the Appendix to this report. They adhere to the recommendations made by the Local Government Association Standards Committee on the School year for "reasonable standardisation", whilst retaining the 195 day model as preferred by Hampshire schools. This will be the first year in which the Easter weekend will be separated from the two-week spring holiday. The purpose of this is to avoid the extremes of term length which a very early or a very late Easter causes with the attendant planning difficulties for schools.

3. The above decision supports Aim 1 of the Corporate Strategy by facilitating planning for learning in schools.
