Contact: Louise Pickford - Ext: 7355; e-mail: [email protected]

1 Summary

Applications have been received from people in Hampshire undertaking projects for personal development. These grants, if awarded, would support Aim 1 of the Corporate Strategy by maximising life opportunities. Applicants' details are as follows:-

1.1 Rachel Duffy, Basingstoke, John Edwards, Eastleigh and Tom Harris, Brockenhurst

Rachel (15), John (14) and Tom (13) have been selected to take part in the 21st World Scout Jamboree in Chelmsford, Essex from 27 July to 8 August 2007. Each scout will develop cultural awareness and understanding of their counterparts; promote world scouting, exchanging ideas and experiences. This event is also to celebrate 100 year of scouting. Over 40,000 young people from various countries across the world will be attending the event and each of the scouts from Hampshire are being asked to raise £1,000 towards his/her cost.

Since this report has been produced a further five requests have been received and it is envisaged that more requests will be submitted from young people up until the time of departure.

In view of the number of current and possible future grant requests (100 scouts from Hampshire have been invited to attend the Jamboree), it is recommended that a global grant of £2,000 be awarded to Hampshire Scouting for them to distribute to those young people wanting to take part in this event.

Recommendation: A global grant of £2,000 be awarded to Hampshire Scouting to distribute to those young people wanting to take part in the Jamboree in Chelmsford, Essex in July 2007.

1.2 Timothy Slade, Petersfield

Timothy (23) is currently studying medicine at the University of Bristol and will be entering his final year in September. Between 4 September and 27 October, he is planning to undertake a medical elective in Delhi at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). His intended topics for further experience period are paediatrics, neurosurgery and infectious disease which will provide him with a broadened preparation for his finals and future career. The cost of the elective is £1,500.

The following comments have been received from the County Council's Student Support Unit: "There are no specific grants for such placements. Students who undertake study abroad remain entitled to their student support and if the placement is over 10 weeks in length then the student can receive a higher rate of loan and help with travel costs, although this is income-assessed."

Since 2000, three applicants have been considered for a grant from this budget towards electives and of these only two were successful. The applicant not awarded a grant had already received financial assistance on a previous occasion.

    Recommendation: £150

1.3 Ben White, Yateley

Ben is currently a 6th form student at Yateley Performing Arts College and has been selected to represent his school and community at the Global Young Leaders Conference in Washington. The twelve-day Conference brings exceptional students, aged between 16 and 18 years, from around the world to an interactive learning experience which will enable him to develop his leadership and communication skills. Total cost for the Conference and flights amounts to £2,160.

At this time the dates of the Conference are unknown.
