1. Summary

1.1 This report summarises progress made toward initiating a youth inter-faith forum.

1.2 This paper supports Aim 1 of the Corporate Strategy (maximising life opportunities) and Aim 4 of the Corporate Strategy (building strong and safe communities). The youth inter-faith forum addresses SACRE's responsibilities in relation to inclusion and diversity.

2. Background

2.1 Hampshire County Council has committed £10,000 a year to inter-faith project development for 3 years, with the prospect of further funding after review. This money was committed after a successful bid for inter-faith work was submitted to the County by Jane Goodwin with the support of the County RE Inspector. It is necessary to bid for this money on the basis of a specific project to do with adult or youth inter-faith development. It is expected that £5,000 will be made available to support the young people's inter-faith project.

2.2 Hampshire's bid for a NASACRE award was not successful because they did not receive our bid (Appendix 1). This was disclosed at the NASACRE AGM on 4 May 2006. The possibility of submitting a bid for 2007-8 is being investigated.

2.3 The Youth Service will identify a person to co-ordinate the project with the support of the County Inspector for RE.

2.4 Southampton SACRE has formally given support for the project and partnership within it. This resulted in a joint meeting on 25 May 2006 involving strategic partners from Southampton and Hampshire

3. Financial Implications

None to SACRE but a bid needs to be prepared to ensure funds from Hampshire County Council to initiate the project in 2006-7.


4. Recommendations

4.1 That SACRE approves the report.

4.2 That SACRE agree to a bid for 2006-7 being submitted to Hampshire County Council to initiate the project and a bid to NASACRE for 2007-8 being submitted if the NASACRE funding is still available.
