WRITE-OFF OF IRRECOVERABLE DEBTS
1. The Executive Member has agreed to write off irrecoverable debts totalling £53,949.72.
2. Executive Member approval is required to write off debts of over £5,000.
3. There were a total of seven debts, four relating to former residential clients, one for a client who received both residential and non-residential care, one debt relating to an overpayment of a direct payment and one relating to the non recovery of client contributions from a provider that went into administration.
4. Income management procedures ensure that debts are minimised as much as possible and that follow up action is taken to recover debts wherever possible.
5. The total write-off of debts for 2005/06 was 0.28% of the Department's budget which compares with 0.47% for 2004/05. The Department continues to review debt recovery, information to clients and financial assessments procedures to ensure that income collection is maximised.
6. This supports aim 5 of the Corporate Strategy by making sure that actions are taken to minimise loss.
