COURTBOURN OLDER PERSONS HOME, FARNBOROUGH -

RE-PROVISION OF SERVICES

1. The Executive Member has approved the re-provision of services at Courtbourn Older Persons Home subject to the care needs of residents being met.

2. Courtbourn was built in 1900. It is a two storey converted building with a major extension built in 1987. Unfortunately as part of the extension it had a two storey wooden construction link which does not meet the current fire regulations.

3. Given the configuration of the building, it presents difficulties in being able to manage efficiently the deployment of staff to ensure a safe environment for the residents and potential residents whose needs are either high physical dependency or dementia.

4. Meeting the requirements of the fire survey and upgrading the facilities of the home to meet the needs of the present day service users would cost in excess of £1.2M at current prices.

5. Full consultation on the re-provision proposals was carried out with residents, families, voluntary organisations, local County Councillors, the local MP and staff. Whilst there were some views about the need to retain a local resource it would not be appropriate to invest in a building at significant cost that would still only meet basic standards, let alone the needs of a modern service.

6. The needs of all existing residents will be met in consultation with them and their families.

7. This supports aim 1 of the Corporate Strategy by assisting timely delivery of caring services and aim 5 by making sure services continually improve.
