Personal Development Grants

Report of the Chief Executive

Contact: Louise Pickford - Ext: 7355; e-mail: [email protected]

1 Summary

Applications have been received from people in Hampshire undertaking projects for personal development. These grants, if awarded, would support Aim 1 of the Corporate Strategy by maximising life opportunities. Applicants' details are as follows:-

1.1 Nicholas Chinnock, Totton

Nicholas is currently completing his A-Levels in Maths, History, German and Music at Applemore College. From August, he has decided to take part in a year-long GAP project teaching English to children up to the age of 10 years in a local kindergarten and primary school in Dresden, Germany. He hopes this placement will improve his German language skills and make him more aware of the country's culture. This will stand him in good stead when he studies for a Degree in International Business Management and Languages as 50% of it will be taught in German.

The cost of the placement is £3,900 and Nick hopes to finance this with £1,200 through

part-time work and £1,300 from a GAP living allowance, leaving him with a £1,400 still to raise.

    Recommendation: £150

1.2 Henry Perkins, Yateley

Henry (aged 15 years) spends four weekday evenings and all of his weekend at a ballet school in Clapham under the direction of Evgeny Goremykin, a former principal at the Bolshoi Ballet School in Moscow.

He has recently won a place at the world-famous ballet school in Moscow, starting this September and now needs to raise a total of approximately £43,000 to fund his studies over the next four years (£10,700 per year).

Henry has managed to obtain £25,000 worth of sponsorship over the four-year period, leaving him with £18,000 still to find.

Details of Henry's sponsorship are shown in the table below:

The following comments have been received from the Director of Children's Services:

Henry attends Calthorpe Park School in Fleet and has for the last two years received a sports bursary of £120 from the County Council in recognition of his achievements. In order to receive a bursary, Henry had to be performing in the top 20 age related nationally. However his recent achievement of being accepted into the Bolshoi has literally put him on the international stage which makes him only the second British student in the 200 year history of the ballet. This is a truly remarkable achievement for a young man still only 15 years of age, and one which deserves our recognition and support.

It is recommended that the £18,000 grant be spread equally over the four-year period, £4,500 per year, starting from 2006/07 to fund Henry's place at The Bolshoi Ballet School in Moscow, subject to receiving a satisfactory progress report from the School.

      Recommendation:

That a grant of £4,500 be awarded from 2006/07 for a period of four years to fund Henry's place at The Bolshoi Ballet School in Moscow, subject to receiving a satisfactory progress report from the School.
