Consultation meeting at Frogmore Community College at 7.00 pm on 11 July 2006
The meeting was attended by the chair and three other members of the governing body, the headteacher and 3 members of staff, 5 parents and County Councillor Adrian Collett. Melanie Saunders and Ian Lawson represented the local authority.
The headteacher (Peter Green) explained the background and reasons why the governing body has asked the local authority to consult on the closure of the sixth form, based on student enrolment, the curriculum offer and value for money.
The following issues were raised and discussed at the meeting:
1. Consideration should be given to the provision of non-academic and vocational courses.
2. Courses with an emphasis on technology might attract more students.
3. What will happen to students who are not independent learners? If Farnborough is not suitable, the nearest alternatives are Guildford and Woking. That will involve significant additional travel for more vulnerable students.
4. What can be done to limit numbers at Farnborough Sixth FormCollege?
5. The LSC has been aware of the issue for some time. Why have they not taken any action?
6. Families on low income may not be able to afford the cost of travel to Farnborough.
7. Can students transfer to Yateley sixth form?
8. Frogmore children may not want to go to Yateley.
9. Why does Hampshire favour sixth form colleges rather than 11-18 schools?
10. What power does Hampshire or the LSC have to ensure that there are sufficient places on transport to Farnborough as at present the bus is full.
11. Who financed the recent extensions to the Frogmore buildings?
12. It is sad that younger siblings will not have the same opportunities as older children. Students in the existing sixth form receive more individual attention.
13. Will decision makers speak to the students?
14. Will existing students be able to complete their two year courses?
15. What will happen if students wish to enrol in September 2006.
16. If this is not a "done deal", will the Executive Member consider alternative suggestions if they are put forward.
The meeting closed at 8.15 pm.
