    Summary

This oral report presented by Nick Brockhurst from Cowplain school will talk of Cowplain's experiences of completing a self-evaluation of religious education. This report contributes to SACRE's role to monitor the provision of RE within Hampshire schools. It relates to points 2 and 3 of the SACRE Development Plan.

The report will also address the school's findings in relation to their particular arrangements for delivering RE for two years out of three years within Key Stage 3.

This paper supports the Corporate Strategy (maximising well being) by ensuring children's provision in religious education is secure.

    Background

Cowplain School have completed a comprehensive self evaluation for religious education. Nick Brockhurst presents SACRE with a summary of the findings and an overview of how this has contributed to the development plan for the RE department of the school.

Cowplain school developed a programme for Religious Education at Key Stage 3 alongside the other Humanities subjects. The school provides RE teaching for two years out of the three within the key stage. SACRE agreed to this programme operating for two years and requested that members should be presented with an update to monitor the success of the programme.

Recommendations

1. SACRE endorse Cowplain's practice in operating a two out of three year programme across Key Stage 3.

2. The monitoring sub-group meet later in the Autumn Term 2006 to consider RE self-evaluations in the light of the good practice presented by Cowplain.
