MOTORWAY DIVERSION ROUTES
1. The Executive Member has responded to a proposal from the Highways Agency for possible improvements to diversion routes along County roads which could be used in the event of a major incident on the motorway and trunk road network. The Agency has indicated that it is prepared to fund such schemes. The availability of alternative routes, and information on them, would be of benefit under normal conditions as well as when traffic is diverted from the motorway and trunk road network.
2. The Executive Member has therefore endorsed a programme of works as follows:
a. A30 Ringway South, Basingstoke, signing improvements
b. A27 Titchfield to Sarisbury, signing improvements
c. North Walls, Winchester, variable message sign
d. Intelligent Transport Systems
The programme summarised above also has the support of the Environment and Transportation Policy Review Committee, which undertook a wider study of motorway diversion routes.
3. The provision of timely, accurate information on alternative routes will help to keep traffic flowing both when there is congestion and when there is an accident or other incident on the motorway or trunk road network, and will therefore contribute towards making Hampshire safer and more secure for all.
