Summary of Bid

(Including breakdown of what money is being spent on, total cost of the project, and timescale of the project)

The East Hampshire Debt Advice Project delivers an independent debt counselling service, provided by the local Citizen Advice Bureaux. By enabling clients to have priority access to professional debt advice, the purpose of the project is to assist people in addressing debt, such as mortgage and rent arrears, and to prevent homelessness. 2007 - 2008 will see the debt advice project move into its fourth year. Over the life-time of the project it has proved to be a successful tool in helping people deal with debt, and get their financial circumstances back under control.

Funding for the project totals £18,500 annually, which is provided by a range of organisations including East Hampshire District Council, Hampshire County Council, The Bordon Charities, and a number of locally based Registered Social Landlords. The money is distributed equally between the three CABx and effectively provides funding for one additional full-time debt advisor between them. Each of the CABx involved presently has to hold a waiting list for general debt advice, which serves as proof of the genuine demand for professional debt advice in East Hampshire. The Debt Advice project increases their capacity to provide priority debt advice, and thus ensures that those in urgent situations are able to receive advice and assistance as quickly as possible.

How does this bid support the targets within the Community Strategy?

The debt advice project supports the aims of the Community Strategy by seeking to ensure that everyone, including disadvantaged groups, has access to facilities, services and opportunities. It also provides a good example of local needs being met by local services.
