In order to carry out its statutory role of monitoring the provision of religious education in Hampshire schools strategies have been agreed with Headteachers in the authority which enable SACRE to gather evidence. This was discussed at the previous SACRE meeting under item 7.

This report provides a summary of the meeting of the monitoring sub group held on 4th December 2006. The group scrutinised and discussed some examples of Self Evaluation Forms (SEFs) provided by schools.

This paper supports the Corporate Strategy (maximising well being) by ensuring monitoring of the quality of RE in Hampshire schools.

    Background

The group was introduced to the format available on the AREIAC (Association of Religious Education Inspectors, Advisors and Consultants) website which is available for use by RE heads of department and RE managers to enable them to make judgements about the provision of RE in their schools. The group was also introduced to the chapters in the two Hampshire Handbooks for RE which provide descriptions of standards of provision ranging from inadequate to outstanding. The group agreed that these were useful documents for supporting schools in their self evaluation.

The group scrutinised two Self Evaluation Forms (SEFs) for RE that had been volunteered by secondary schools. In both schools the provision was judged to be generally good.

The group recognised that there were some inconsistencies in the formats used

by schools and the ways in which schools analyse their provision. It was agreed,

however, that SEFs will provide useful evidence to enable SACRE to monitor

the provision of RE in Hampshire.

2.4

A questionnaire was sent to all Hampshire schools in early January in order to monitor the impact of Living Difference, the agreed syllabus for RE. The results will be scrutinised by the monitoring sub-group and the findings presented at a future SACRE meeting.

    Recommendations

    1. That SACRE endorses the continued activities of the monitoring sub group .
