Kings' School Admission Policy for Boarding Places 2008-2009

This policy will apply to all admissions from 1 September 2008, including casual admissions. It will be used during 2007-2008 for allocating places for September 2008 as part of the main admission round for Year 7.

The governors will consider applications received up to the published deadline of midday on Friday 19 October 2007. Late applications (i.e. those submitted after midday on 19 October 2007) will be considered after all on time applications unless exceptional circumstances merit earlier consideration. Letters to parents offering a secondary school place will be sent by the County Council on 3 March 2008.

Kings' School will admit up to six boys to the boarding facility each year in addition to the published admission number (PAN) of 330. Boys will only be given a place if there is accommodation available to suit their age group and if they are assessed as being suitable for boarding.

All boarding applications will be assessed as to their suitability for boarding. This assessment will be completed before the oversubscription criteria are applied. The following two conditions will be used to assess suitability for boarding:

    a) Whether a boy presents a serious health and safety hazard to other boarders; or

    b) Whether a boy is developmentally suited to a boarding place.

If the boarding facility is oversubscribed, places will be offered in the following priority order. Places for late applications will be allocated using the same criteria.

1. Boys who are in the care of a local authority or provided with accommodation by that authority in accordance with Section 22 of the Children Act 1989. (A letter from the Children's Services Department confirming the boy's status must be provided.)

2. Boys who have a boarding need. This means:

    - boys who are at risk

      - boys from an unstable home environment

      - sons of key workers working abroad whose work dictates that they spend much of the year overseas

      - boys who have a brother in the boarding house, who will still be on roll at the time of their admission

      - boys who have a sister at The Westgate boarding house, who will still be on roll at the time of their admission.

3. Boys who have a sibling at the school, who will still be on roll at the time of their admission.

4. Boys living farthest from the school, measured by a straight line on an appropriate map or mapping system from the school to the property.

If the boarding facility is oversubscribed from within any of the above categories, the distance criterion (see 4, above) will be used to prioritise applications.

Parents of boys who are refused admission to the boarding house because they are deemed unsuitable for boarding provision will be given the reasons and advised of their right to appeal to an independent appeal panel.
