Summary

1.1

Brookfield Community School is a large secondary school which is located at Sarisbury Green. There are currently 1,753 pupils (11-16 years) on roll.

1.2

The first phase of a major scheme of internal refurbishment works to create a fully accessible school for pupils with a wide range of impairments was carried out in 2005. These works included internal remodelling to create a hygiene and therapy suite, the relocation of second floor food technology and textiles rooms to the ground floor, additional accessible toilets and the provision of some powered doors. It is now proposed to carry out further works to ensure that the curriculum can be delivered at ground floor level.

1.3

The Director of Property, Business and Regulatory Services has progressed the design of the proposals and the purpose of this report is to seek approval to the works.

1.4

The proposed works will maximise wellbeing and enhance the quality of place for all users of the school by providing fully accessible curriculum facilities.

2

Recommendation

2.1

That the Executive Member for Education approves the proposed works at Brookfield Community School, at a total estimated cost of £287,000, excluding fees.

3

Scope of the Works

3.1

It is proposed to continue the work carried out in 2005 by providing further powered entrance doors to the remainder of the classroom blocks, which in some cases will necessitate complete replacement of the doors. Some external ramping works will also be carried out as part of the scheme. Several doorways are to be widened to provide access to areas of the curriculum which are currently difficult to negotiate.

3.2

The scheme also includes the refurbishment of two food technology rooms to upgrade the facilities to current standards, following the successful relocation of the third room to the ground floor under the previous phase of works.

4

Funding and Timing

4.1

Funding for the scheme, exclusive of fees, is as follows: £

Children's Services Capital Programme 07/08 (SAI) 105

Children's Services Capital Programme 05/06 (NDS) 76

School (devolved capital allocation) tbc 106

                      287

4.2

Approval to negotiate the works with Brymor Ltd, a preferred contractor who carried out the previous phase of works on the school, was given by the Buildings, Land and Procurement Panel on 20 March. It is anticipated that the works will commence on site during July 2007 and be completed during October 2007.

5

Consultation with Local Member

5.1

Councillor Sean Woodward, the local Member for this area, has been consulted on the proposals and he has confirmed that he is supportive of the scheme.
