Summary

1.1

Henry Beaufort School is located at East Woodhay Road, Harestock, a residential area on the outskirts of Winchester. The school's net capacity is 1,100, with a current number on roll of 1,001 children (11-16 years).

1.2

It is now planned to refurbish two existing science laboratories to improve curriculum delivery and improve fire safety.

1.3

The Acting Director of Property, Business and Regulatory Services has progressed the design of the proposed scheme at Henry Beaufort Secondary School and the purpose of this report is to outline the proposals and seek approval to the scheme.

The proposed scheme will maximise wellbeing and enhance the quality of place and improve safety for all users of the school

Recommendation

That the Executive Lead Member for Children's Services (Education) approves the internal refurbishment scheme at Henry Beaufort School, Winchester, at an estimated total cost of £212,000, excluding fees.

Scope of the Works

3.1

The science laboratories are located on the ground floor of the building. A full refurbishment programme will include new ceilings and lighting, new fitted furniture, new floor finishes and redecoration.

3.2

Fire safety works will also be carried out as part of this scheme, to include replacement of existing ceiling fire barriers and upgrading of existing doors identified by the Fire Risk Assessment.

Funding and Timing

4.1

Subject to the necessary approvals it is anticipated that tenders will be invited during March 2008, work will commence on site during June 2008 and be completed during September 2008.

Consultation with Local Member

5.1

Councillor Charlotte Bailey, the Local Member, has been consulted on the proposed refurbishment scheme and has commented:

"I give my wholehearted support to this proposal. This will make an enormous improvement to the current science classrooms, making it easier to deliver a first rate science curriculum and improving the safety of the people who use the rooms."

Conclusion

The proposed refurbishment and fire safety works will improve safety and curriculum delivery.
