Summary

1.1

Cranbourne Business and Enterprise College is located at Wessex Close, in a residential area of Basingstoke. The school's net capacity is 1,300, with a current number on roll of 1,045 children (11-16 years).

1.2

It is now planned to refurbish the existing science laboratory accommodation to improve curriculum delivery. Existing corridors and stairwells will also be refurbished as part of this scheme, to include replacement of existing doors to meet current fire safety regulations.

The Acting Director of Property, Business and Regulatory Services has progressed the design of the proposed scheme at Cranbourne Business and Enterprise College and the purpose of this report is to outline the proposals and seek approval to the scheme.

The proposed scheme will maximise wellbeing, enhance the quality of place and improve safety for all users of the school.

Recommendation

That the Executive Lead Member for Children's Services (Education) approves the internal refurbishment scheme at the Cranbourne Business and Enterprise College, Basingstoke, at an estimated total cost of £336,000, excluding fees.

Scope of the Works

3.1

Refurbishment works to the two science laboratories (one located on the first floor, the other on the second floor) will include new floor coverings, refurbished workbenches, some replacement electrical fittings, gas and water taps. The laboratories will also be redecorated.

3.2

The existing first and second floor doors will be replaced to meet current fire regulation standards, as identified by a Fire Risk Assessment.

Funding and Timing

4.1

Subject to the necessary approvals it is anticipated that tenders will be invited during March 2008, work will commence on site during May 2008 and be completed during September 2008.

Consultation with Local Member

5.1

Councillor Jo Kelly, the Local Member has been consulted on the proposed refurbishment scheme and she has confirmed that she is supportive of the proposals.

Conclusion

The proposed refurbishment and fire safety works will improve safety and curriculum delivery.
