1. Summary
1.1 This report details requests which have been received for financial assistance from the Policy and Resources grants budget.
Recommendations:
(a) That a grant of £2,300 be awarded for the Fawley Community Fun Day on 10 May.
(b) That a grant of £5,000 be awarded to the Help for Heroes charity towards a new swimming pool/gym facility at the Headley Court rehabilitation centre.
2. Background Information
2.1 Fawley Community Fun Day
An extensive range of local agencies including the Police, Fire, Youth Service, businesses and Fawley Parish Council have come together to organise a Community Fun Day at Gang Warily Recreation Ground on 10 May. The event will encompass a range of activities for families, including football and It's a Knockout tournaments, raffle and BBQ. Any monies raised on the day will be donated to the Honeypot Charity.
The organisers are seeking a contribution of £2,300 to finance the remaining items required for a successful day including refreshments, transport, tournament medals, additional WC facilities and publicity.
The local Member, Councillor Dunsdon, has been consulted and fully supports this application.
The Director of Children's Services is fully supportive of this request and recommends a grant being awarded.
2.2 Help for Heroes Appeal
The Help for Heroes charity was founded in October 2007 with the specific purpose of raising £6m to build a new swimming pool/gym complex at Headley Court in Epsom, the tri-service rehabilitation centre where serving soldiers, sailors and airmen go to rebuild their lives having been wounded in active service. Work on the new facility is expected to start in the Autumn and be completed in Spring/Summer 2009.
The charity is seeking a contribution from the County Council towards this Appeal, which since it began has raised over £3m.
In view of the County Council's long association with the Armed Forces it is recommended that a one-off grant of £5,000 be awarded towards this new facility.
The awarding of both these grants would support all of the County Council's Corporate priorities.
