Dementia: how is Hampshire dealing with the consequences of the predicted rise of 17.5% in dementia prevalence in the county by 2015 ? By 2026, a quarter of Hampshire population will be of pension age and half of those will be over 75 years. In the very eldest group, the 85 years and over, the proportion of people is set to rise by the largest amount. This is all very good news but we must plan how we will be able to care for them. In Hampshire birth rates are below replacement level and life expectancy is rising, leading to higher proportions of older people relative to younger people.

Demand for well-being in the home:

a) do we know the scale and growth of this demand, and are there in place robust and effective ways of serving this need ? Or is the usual situation of incremental, uncoordinated provision with no overarching direction ?

b) who or what should be the vehicle for service delivery ? A role for the LAA with local LSPs as performance and service monitoring vehicles ?

Background: an emerging theme in healthcare is the desire to keep people in their homes rather than in other forms of supported accommodation - major issues of cost and availability of such provision. It is an area in which there are many players - County and Districts, Housing Associations, voluntary and community groups providing a range of services, many of which are run on a shoe string. Yet the goal is to keep people safe, healthy and active in their homes.

Concern: are these disparate actions effectively dealing with an emerging and swiftly growing demand that is probably better catered for in the public sector with the private sector lagging well behind ?

Community Action Hampshire

Hidden housing need in rural areas, and the impact that it has on people's health and well-being: this is said to be quite an issue for older people and for younger people, many of whom have to continue to live with their parents.
