Yellow Bus Pilot - Achievements and Progress

February 2007 to date

Project aims

    · to reduce school gate congestion

* to provide a sustainable alternative to the car

* to provide a dedicated, safe bus service

Pilot area: Basingstoke

Launch date: February 2007

Schools involved:

· Aldworth Science College,

· Kempshott Infant School,

· Kempshott Junior School

· Park View Infant School,

· Park View Junior School

Scheme features

· Three 55 seat yellow buses

· Regular drivers.

· Seat belts.

· Flat fare

· Choice of days of travel to suit personal circumstances.

Progress to-date and Achievements

· 179 children have registered to use the bus service.

· Parents have confidence in the service.

· Kempshott schools reported reduced congestion outside of schools. Saving of 25 car journeys per day on average.

· Fact finding visit by Yellow School Bus Commission (set up by Firstgroup to inform the debate on Home to School Transport) on 3 March 2008. Commission members discussed scheme with Cllr Kirk, county officers, school staff, parents and children.

· Yellow School Bus Commission representatives commended everyone for working together with clearly stated objectives. They felt that this was good practice of

    yellow school buses especially in a Primary context

Unexpected Achievements

· Improved attendance figures due to a reduction in late arrivals to school.
