Chairman's Communications

15 May 2008

Members, as you know I am not one for long speeches however, on this occasion, - and I hope you are sitting comfortably - I will break with tradition and speak for slightly longer than usual!

I would like to start with mentioning some of the memorable events I have attended:

Since last May I have had the opportunity of attending 11 royal visits to the County. Two of the most notable were:-

Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal at Lymington showing economy when she renamed two boats for Sailability. Her Royal Highness made one bottle of champagne last for the two boats. Instead of breaking the bottle, she pulled the cord and dribbled the contents over both bows!

It was a real pleasure to meet Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cornwall at the opening of the Winchester Discovery Centre. An utterly charming, down to earth lady who had done her homework.

As you may recall from my previous communications, I visited a number of County Council residential homes during my year as Chairman. The quality of care and cheerfulness was very high throughout all of the homes. However, the standard of cleanliness was not - where ever a residential home was in a wealthy area, the local residents employed all the cleaners at considerably more than the County can afford.

Of all the many and varied engagements I attended, I can only say that I have had a wonderful time. There are far too many to single out but my everlasting memory will be - good food, good company and no washing up!

I hosted several events for voluntary organisations, the members of whom all expressed their pleasure at being able to network face to face with others throughout the County.

I gave more coffee mornings than dinners because we found that the smaller numbers meant a more convivial and personal atmosphere. These were also an excellent opportunity use Serle's House as was intended when purchased.

I would like to thank three people in particular for their help during my term of office:

Firstly, my Chaplain - Canon Michael St-John Channell for supporting me during my term in office.

Secondly, to my Vice Chairman - Councillor Tim Knight - who, as always, has been a tower of strength. He has deputised for me on many occasions, has never let me down and has been a wonderful ambassador for the County.

Lastly, to my "white knight". Many has been the time during County Council meetings when my mind has gone blank, but each time this has happened, Ken Thornber immediately stepped into the breach and rescued me - quite often before many of you knew what was happening! I am most truly grateful, to quote Chaucer, - he has been the most gallant, parfait knight!

As usual, when a Chairman steps down, one goes with a certain reluctance - nonetheless I must confess that I will not be sorry to return to committee work (although I am still waiting to hear which committees I will be sitting on!). I am also looking forward to having more time to work in my Division again.

In conclusion, may I thank each and every one of you for your unfailing support, courtesy and good humour during my year in office. It has been a privilege and honour to be have been able to serve the County in this way.
