Summary | |
1.1 |
The Aldworth Science College is located at Western Way, Basingstoke, and is designated a fully resourced school for disabled pupils. The school capacity is 975 and there are currently 583 pupils (11-16 years) on roll. | |

An initial phase of works to undertake essential fire precaution and lighting improvements was approved as part of the Landlord's New Deals for Schools capital repairs programme and Corporate Risk Assessment capital repairs programme 2008/09. | |

As part of the ongoing fire risk profile exercise prioritising fully resourced schools for disabled pupils, it is proposed to re-suite a number of rooms to the ground floor of the Dartmouth block (a three-storey building) to allow more inclusive use by pupils in wheelchairs | |

The Acting Director of Property, Business and Regulatory Services has progressed the design of the proposed scheme at Aldworth Science College, Basingstoke, and the purpose of this report is to outline and seek approval to the proposals. | |

The proposed scheme will maximise wellbeing and improve safety by providing inclusive facilities for disabled pupils at ground floor level. | |

Recommendation | |
That the Executive Lead Member for Children's Services (Education) approves the proposals for the scheme for internal reconfiguration and fire safety works at Aldworth Science College, Basingstoke at an estimated total cost of £735,000, excluding fees. | ||

Scope of the Works | |

The fire precaution works include the formation of protected corridors and staircases, upgrade of the fire alarm systems and other structural fire precaution measures to all blocks. The proposals also involve the replacement of obsolete electrical light fittings and suspended ceilings to classroom and corridor areas in various parts of the building. | |

The internal reconfiguration of classrooms will provide: · two IT rooms and a Society Health Development Diploma room to the ground floor of the Dartmouth block · Modern Foreign Language rooms to the ground floor of the Salisbury block · Special Educational Needs to the ground floor of the Bolton block. Other finishing works associated with the incidental effect of the internal reconfiguration of the classroom areas will be carried out. | |

Existing facilities on the first and second floor will be retained to provide educational facilities for fully ambulant pupils. | |

Funding and Timing | |
4.1 |
Approval to procurement of the initial phase of fire precautions works through the framework arrangements is being sought at the Executive Member for Policy and Resources meeting on 23 July. | |
4.2 |
It is anticipated that works will start on site during August 2008 and be completed during the autumn term. | |
