1) Purpose:
1.1. The purpose of this report is to update the Harbour Board on the latest situation on current issues, specifically with regard to minerals extraction at former Hamble airfield site.
2) Contextual Issues: Minerals extraction
2.1 The following Minute was agreed at the Harbour Board meeting held on 11th July 2008:
'That the Chairman of the Board and Dr S Tomson, together with the Director of Recreation and Heritage, should seek a further meeting with the Director of Environment to reassert the Board's concerns about the potential impact of sand/gravel extraction at Hamble Airfield on the River Hamble.'
2.2 Following the Board meeting, the Chairman approached the Director of Environment with a view to arranging a meeting. The Director of Environment declined to meet because the Hampshire Minerals Plan has been approved by the County Council and partner authorities for publication and subsequent submission to Government and she could do nothing further. The next opportunity for raising objections will be following the publication of the Plan in autumn 2008. Once representations have been considered, the Plan will be submitted to the Secretary of State and will be subject to an independent examination in 2009. Details of how to make representations will be given at the time of the publication. The Board will continue to monitor developments and assess the implications for the harbour and its environment. If and when planning applications are
brought forward the Board will stand ready to make appropriate representations to decision makers.
