The monitoring sub group has met on three occasions in order to monitor standards in RE.

Background

Qualitative Survey

The group heard a report from Katherine Wedell who has been conducting qualitative research into the impact of the syllabus Living Difference on children's attainment in RE. During the meeting she explained the procedures that she is applying to enable her to make a clear analysis of the findings. Her interviews in 20 primary and secondary phase schools are now complete. Her findings so far indicate that there is no doubt that the implementation of Living Difference has raised standards of RE in schools. Her findings will enable her to identify why that is the case. The report will be completed by December 2008 .

The group thanked Katherine for her work so far. It was recognised how important this research will be in contributing to the process of review of the Agreed Syllabus in 2009/10.

Monitoring RE through scrutiny of schools' Self Evaluation Forms

Within the time allocation, the group was able to scrutinise one of the Self Evaluation Forms (SEFs) for RE from the number that were available. The school judged itself to be in need of development for RE. Since the completion of the SEF the school has received support from the County RE team. The remainder of the SEFs will be looked at during the next meeting.
