1) The Decision:

1.1. That the Executive Member endorse the approach being taken for Hampshire County Council to derive benefit from and provide support to London 2012 from within existing budget resources.

1.2. That Hampshire County Council focuses on 3 broad work areas; schools, corporate programmes and support to the geographic county of Hampshire.

1.3. That a workshop for a legacy plan for London 2012 be organised for the autumn of 2009.

2) Reasons for the decision

2.1. London 2012 is only three years away and there is a growing sense of urgency for Hampshire County Council and partners to give support to the Games and provide a legacy to Hampshire residents.

2.2. Legacy can be derived from three broad areas of work - schools, corporate and partner collaboration.

2.3. A public service agreement target to "deliver a successful Olympic Games and Paralympic Games with a sustainable legacy and get more children and young people taking part in high quality PE and sport" is a key priority outcome for Government.

2.4. London 2012 provides an excellent opportunity to deliver the Corporate Objectives by Maximising Well-being and Enhancing our Quality of Place as well as the overall departmental objective to increase and broaden participation.

3) Other options considered and rejected:

    3.1. Option 1:

    a) For Hampshire to adopt a low key response to the Games: this once in a lifetime opportunity presents a unique opportunity for Hampshire to derive benefit from, as well as provide support to, London 2012 and, if missed, could impact upon the Council's reputation locally, regionally and nationally.

4) Conflicts of Interest:

4.1. Conflicts of interest declared by the decision-maker:

    None

4.2. Conflicts of interest declared by other Executive Members consulted:
