REPORT OF THE

HAMPSHIRE FIRE AND RESCUE AUTHORITY

APPOINTMENTS AND REVIEW OF COMMITTEE STRUCTURE AND DECISION MAKING ARRANGEMENTS

1. As the Council is aware, Councillor Royston Smith (appointed to the Authority by Southampton City Council) is now the Authority's Chairman, with County Councillors Ian Beagley and Adrian Evans appointed as the two Vice-Chairmen. The intention is that one of the Vice-Chairmen will present the Authority's report at County Council meetings.

2. The Authority has appointed members to its Finance and General Purposes, Governance, Human Resources, Performance Review and Standards Committees and their respective Chairmen and Vice-Chairmen. It has also made various other appointments in the normal way. The Authority has asked the Governance Committee to undertake a review of the Authority's decision making arrangements to ensure they remain fit for purpose in addressing future challenges facing the Authority. The Committee will report back, with recommendations to the Authority in due course.

3. The Authority has congratulated John Bonney on having recently become President of the Chief Fire Officers' Association. As well as a significant personal achievement for Mr. Bonney, it is a clear acknowledgement by his professional peers of how well he is regarded.

ACTIVITY REPORT

The Authority received a report of recent activity by Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service in responding to emergencies and ensuring safety of communities. One aspect highlighted was that there have been a significant number of thatch fires across the County in recent months. A range of issues are being looked at, including the community safety advice that is given, with a view to developing more effective ways of preventing such incidents in future.
