1) Purpose of Report:
1.1. To inform SACRE of the activities and findings of the Monitoring sub group
2) Contextual Issues:
2.1. This paper supports the Corporate Strategy (maximising well being) by ensuring children's provision in religious education is secure.
3) Self Evaluation forms (SEFs) completed by schools
3.1. Schools are required to complete a self evaluation form (SEF) in relation to the general education provision for their pupils/students. Subject departments (including RE) in secondary schools often complete an annual self evaluation to contribute to the whole school SEF but this is not usual practice in the primary phase.
3.2. The self evaluation forms for religious education provided for the SACRE monitoring sub group have been provided by schools that have sent a delegate on a course for self evaluation in RE or a development group.
3.3. The group scrutinised 8 SEFs for RE from the primary phase. Following full discussion of the SEFs, it was agreed that these were a most encouraging set of reports. The common themes were to improve assessment, and conduct training of teachers as a result of frequent staff turnover.
3.4. All the schools judged their provision to be good or satisfactory but the group was concerned about some inconsistencies in the judgements made. However, the group agreed that the level of rigour applied to the evaluation of provision was commendable and that most RE managers in the sample had provided accurate details about what needed to improve in the school in order to support teaching staff and improve RE provision for pupils.
.
4) Conclusions: That SACRE notes the report.
