Free school meals
Pupils protected from losing Free School Meals
From 1 April 2025, the Government's transitional protection arrangement for income-based free school meals will end. From this date there is no protection for eligible claims.
This means any child confirmed as eligible for free school meals from 1 April 2025 onwards will be subject to further eligibility checks, which in Hampshire, takes place weekly. If there is a change in their circumstances and parents or carers no longer receive a qualifying benefit, they will lose entitlement to their child's free school meals. This also applies to any No Recourse to Public Funds / Asylum Seeker children that are currently confirmed as eligible for free school meals.
Transitional protection applies to individual children not families. Therefore, other children in the family won't automatically qualify for free school meals. Parents or carers must meet the eligibility criteria when they apply for free school meals.
