How we work

Join a national leader in
Children’s Social Care – Hampshire County Council

We have an excellent track record in improving outcomes for children and were found to be Outstanding in all areas of our practice by Ofsted in June 2024.

With a senior leadership team with combined experience of over 60 years, in Hampshire we have a unique understanding of children’s social care and what it means to be a children’s social worker. This blend of skills within our management team has allowed us to structure and deliver a unique service, which is of the utmost benefit not just to Hampshire’s vulnerable young people and their families, but to our staff as well. An appreciation for the skills, facilities and technology that social workers need has allowed us to transform our practice for the better and is what makes us one of just a handful of Outstanding service providers in the entire country.

“The support’s been phenomenal; there is a lot of communication between social workers and managers. I feel I know where Hampshire is going, we’re very innovative.”

Beyond this, our 'Partners in Practice' status allows us to showcase a model of excellence that other local authorities and the whole social care system can learn from. We are committed to sharing our knowledge across the social care landscape and have already seen real successes when working in this way with partners such as Isle of Wight, Torbay, Berkshire and more. With our newly established Outstanding status, we can provide unique insight and expertise to peers and colleagues, to help them to improve their service and provide better outcomes to children and families.

Our strategy

The last few years in Hampshire have seen the introduction of new staff, technology and ways of working, all of which allow our staff to continue to deliver high levels of service and positive outcomes for the families we work with.

As an Outstanding authority, we are continually looking for ways to transform, grow and adapt our practice to offer the best possible outcomes. We are expanding our teams and encouraging our staff to work in new, collaborative ways to provide Hampshire’s children with the best possible chances. This includes the introduction of new roles, team structures and technology to provide families with a diverse range of expertise to help them and guide them through their journeys.

“The learning and experience our social workers get from supporting other authorities is immeasurable.”

The Hampshire approach

The Hampshire Approach guides how we work with children, families, partners and each other. It is a whole system approach which at its core builds on the strengths within a family to meet the needs of their children now and in the long-term.

  • Creating relationships
  • Strengthening the family’s support network
  • Building on strengths

Our practice model is centred around motivational interviewing, solution-focused practice and restorative practice.
