Chapel volunteer
About the opportunity
The Chapel was once the centre of the vast Royal Victoria Military Hospital, which served the soldiers of the Commonwealth from 1863 until 1966. You can help visitors discover the history of this much-loved landmark by joining our volunteer community. The role of a volunteer is to welcome visitors to the Royal Victoria Military Hospital Chapel, assisting the public in reception/shop and the exhibition. Directing them around the building and interpreting some of the items on display.
Typical tasks and duties
You will be the first point of contact for visitors to the exhibition and as such you will need to:
- be friendly and approachable to all visitors and provide a high level of customer service
- answer visitor queries or direct them to an appropriate member of staff
- assist with retail sales and cash handling
- answer questions from visitors and offer information where appropriate about the exhibition and building
- check tower tickets and give a health and safety briefing, (when Chapel tower opens).
For safety purposes you will also need to maintain a level of visitor supervision, understand and implement health and safety procedures including evacuation.
Training
No previous experience is necessary. Park staff and volunteers can show you the tasks.

- Chapel Winter opening volunteer hours 10.30am to 1.30pm and 1.30pm to 4pm
- Chapel Summer opening volunteer hours 10.30am to 1.30pm and 1.30pm to 5pm

Desirable skills, experience and knowledge:
- an interest in heritage and museum objects
- be confident in engaging with different audiences and be approachable and friendly
- although no prior knowledge of the sites history will be necessary, an enthusiasm for the subject matter of the Royal Victoria Military Hospital and a willingness to convey this to others is essential
- an ability to work in a team with site staff and volunteers to enhance the visitors visit
