Conservation volunteer at Royal Victoria Country Park

About the opportunity

The role will work alongside other volunteers and the Royal Victoria Country Park Ranger staff to carry out a wide variety of conservation and estate management tasks. The Park has different types of habitats including woodland, grassland, and shoreline, so there are always plenty of conservation tasks to do in managing the site for wildlife and visitors.

Typical tasks and duties

Many of the conservation tasks are dependent on the seasons. Throughout a typical year the conservation and gardening tasks could include:

  • coppicing, woodland management and dead hedge laying and scrub management
  • installing and maintaining gates, fences, signs and benches
  • keeping footpaths accessible by clearing overgrowing vegetation and maintaining the surface
  • keeping the park tidy and litter free
  • visitor management and events
  • preparing the beds for planting
  • planting out bulbs and young shrubs
  • weeding and mulching the beds
  • watering and caring for plants
  • looking after the gardening tools and equipment
  • compliance with our health and safety procedures and willingness to follow instructions
  • and many other tasks depending on the site

Skills and knowledge

No specific skills are needed for this role although most of the work is based outdoors so an interest in the countryside and a willingness to work in all weathers is desirable. A basic level of fitness is needed as conservation tasks require physical activity on uneven terrain. The role will be working alongside other volunteers and will be in contact with members of the public so good interpersonal skills would also be helpful.

Training

No previous experience is needed as any tasks and use of hand tools will be demonstrated by the Countryside Rangers or an experienced volunteer.

When

The sessions will run weekly on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10.00am.
