Cercidiphyllum (katsura)

Although this is a monotypic genus (meaning only having one species), the Gardens have many varieties of this tree, including dwarf, fastigiate (upright growing), weeping, and those that have different coloured leaves on emergence.

C.Japonica ‘Morioka Weeping’ is an outstanding weeping tree, and our two specimens in the Winter Garden are thought to be the first in cultivation outside of Japan. These trees are sometimes called the toffee or caramel tree as in spring and autumn they can exude an aroma that smells like caramel.
