Ligustrum (privet)
The Gardens’ Ligustrum collection contains 193 individual plants.
Most people know the common hedging type of privet, but there are some beautiful species that make attractive specimen trees too. Ligustrum compactum from the Himalayas is a large, fast-growing evergreen tree. It grows well in part shade or full sun and is not fussy about soil type. L. quihoui is a rare species from China and Korea that makes an attractive small shrub, and, like many species, has attractive black berries.
