Champion tree

When you hear the words ‘champion’ you might think of athletes winning competitions or maybe even superheroes saving the day, but what is a champion tree?

A champion is someone who is the best at what they do, so a champion tree is a tree that is the best at growing. The height and width (sometimes called girth) of a tree is measured and a record of its size is uploaded into a special database called The Tree Register. The Tree Register looks at all of the information about all of the trees of that kind and picks out the biggest. These are the champion trees!

There are lots of things that help trees grow, but a lot of work has to go into growing a tree to be the biggest of its kind. That’s why we’re so proud that Sir Harold Hillier Gardens has over 600 champion trees!
