Kitchen roll seed pods

Creating kitchen roll seed starter pods is an easy way to get the kids crafting and learning about nature as they watch the germination process with fascination. It’s also a cheaper, more environmentally friendly alternative to using peat or plastic pots. So, whether you’re looking to sow seeds for your vegetable patch or add colour to your outdoor space with flowers, follow our simple guide for successful seedlings.

You will need:

  • Cardboard kitchen roll tubes
  • Scissors
  • A tray or plate to put your pods on
  • Seed starting compost
  • Twine
  • Seeds

Step 1 - Cut your kitchen roll into two halves.

Step 2 - Cut four equally spaced slits, about 2cm long, at one end of the tube to create four tabs.

Step 3 – Fold the tabs down so they overlap.

Step 4 – Fill the pods with your choice of seed starting compost.

Step 5 – Place the pod onto tray or plate, use twine to bunch pods together and prevent them falling over.

Step 6 – Plant according to instructions on your seed packet. Our expert gardeners recommend planting poppies, marigolds, or chives for quick results.

Once the seeds have started to grow, you can open the bottom of the pods and plant them straight in your garden. The cardboard will breakdown over time and your seeds will keep growing strong. Alternatively, you can gently remove the seedling from the pods for planting directly in your garden and put the remains of the pod in your compost.
