Artist statement

Olana Light’s practice moves between sculpture, performance, and moving images and reflects the multiplicities of identity and a never-ending pursuit of belonging. She makes eco-based, immersive, otherworldly installations and wearable sculptures which are the mythic representation of her worldview.

Viewers are invited to observe the story of human creatures blending back with their natural environment and creating a ‘we-world’- an inclusive environment at the intersection of all systems, a realm in which everybody belongs. Freeing herself from the shackles of social constraints: she hides the presence of her person by masking her race, gender, social status, and class; she transforms into a being who is constantly seeking a home, trying to understand what it means to be human and questioning where she belongs. Exploring notions of ‘self’, and its connection with the human body, nature, and places her work offers new perceptions by challenging audiences to accept the absurdity of the ‘other’, to question their beliefs, and to interrogate their sense of belonging.

Nature is a source of inspiration for Olana Light, she wants to inspire us to build an unimagined future world, to live in harmony with nature, and to make the world a better place for those around us and who come after us. She seeks to create a dialogue for change: about nature and our relationship with it; about who we are; and about why art is and should be for everyone to access.
