Apply to suspend a bus stop

Anyone undertaking works on the highway that will obstruct a bus stop must complete an application to request a temporary bus stop closure and, if applicable, a temporary bus stop to replace it.

Before you apply

To enable us to process your application as quickly as possible, there are some key pieces of information that you should have. This includes:

  • the bus stop location
  • time and length of the bus stop suspension
  • whether a temporary bus stop will be required
  • your relevant permit number to perform works on the highway
After your application

Following the approval of your application and payment of the associated fee, the Passenger Transport Team will arrange for the bus stop to be closed and, if required, for a temporary bus stop to be put in place.

At the end of the application form you have to pay the administration fees as set out below. You cannot submit the form until you have paid the fee.

The licence fee is applicable in all scenarios and is detailed below.

Description 2024/25 Cost
Licence fee for one bus stop £123
Licence fee for a pair of bus stops* £139

*Bus stop must be the immediate corresponding bus stop. Two individual bus stops do not meet the ‘pair’ criteria.

For HCC to arrange the closure and reopening of a bus stop, these details are below and are in addition to the licence fee (e.g One bus stop + Next day closure = total £358).

Description 2024/25 Cost
Standard request (More than 24hrs notice) £199
Next day request (Less than 24hrs notice) £235
Immediate request (Same day) £277
Failed to reopen fee** £116

**’Failed to reopen fee’ will be applied if less than 24hrs notice is given to extend the bus stop closure for any reason.

Once you have all the required information and your payment card ready, you can apply to temporarily close or move a bus stop.
