Traffic surveys

Hampshire's Traffic Survey team carries out surveys and collects and maintains data for the highway network across Hampshire.

We hold a large database of modern and historical traffic data, collected over many years. It includes data from different types of counts.

To find out about the types of counts and surveys the team can provide, see Request a new survey.

Find existing data

To see what the historic data the team hold, or sites where live data is continuously collected, search our data map.

Limited data is available free of charge. If a site has free data available, it will be visible under the 'ADT' heading when you click on the location on the map.

Manual counts

Manual classified counts involve deploying traffic enumerators to observe and count the data. These counts are generally carried out over a 12 hour time frame, usually 7am-7pm on a single day. A manual count using enumerators can encompass anything from a simple classified passing count just counting vehicles passing a fixed point to a junction turning count, PV2, registration or parking beat. These can also be tailored to include queue lengths or anything else that can be captured manually.

Automatic traffic counts (ATCs)

Automatic traffic counts can be arranged on a temporary short-term basis to provide data on volume, speed and vehicle length classification. Generally installed over a seven-day period our radar devices are attached to street furniture and provide the modern equivalent of older style pneumatic tube counters.

Speed indicator devices (SIDs)

SIDs are signs that light up if someone is travelling too fast as they approach the sign. We can deploy these in a chosen location.

CityRadar

CityRadar counters are especially designed to count cyclists and pedestrians on dedicated cycle or pedestrian paths.

Journey times

Journey Time information can be supplied to help provide data for projects, both in advance of projects to confirm standard journey times and also during works when routes maybe restricted or delayed. Journey Time can also provide base data for feasibility studies, bid reports and post-delivery monitoring. The process can supply data for whichever route is required and can report several routes at once, as frequently as 5 minute intervals, or longer if required. The system is flexible enough to allow for smaller intervals during peak hours to larger intervals during off peak hours.

Permanent site

We can set up a permanent fixed point traffic counters that collect data 24hrs a day 7 days a week per annum.

We can offer two types of permanent counters; traditional permanent inductive loops cut into the road of Vivacity AI cameras that attach to lamp columns.  The main difference between the two is that Vivacity cameras can count pedestrian and cycle movements as well as traffic.  However, not all locations are suitable for Vivacity cameras so each project would be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

  • Permanent Cycle Only sites (Inductive loops or Piezos)
  • Permanent Vehicle and Cycle sites (Inductive loops or Piezos)
