Active Travel Fund; Dropped Kerbs

Improving accessibility and making it pleasant for the local community.

Last update: June 2026

Romsey

Hampshire County Council has appointed M Group to carry out improvement works in Romsey. The works involve the construction of flush dropped kerbs and informal crossing points.

Please see the construction programme table and the location plan (MS Sway document).

Works started on Monday 12 January 2026, following a reprogramme of the schedule, with expected completion of late spring 2026. Permitted working hours for each remaining site will be available on the construction programme in due course.

The construction works will include;

  • existing kerbstones to be removed
  • new kerbstones are installed at a lower height to create a smooth crossing point
  • localised resurfacing of the pavement area
  • installation of tactile (bumpy) paving at uncontrolled crossing points

Dropped kerb works are taking place at various locations in Romsey. For the safety of the public and the work force, these works are being carried out under temporary two-way, three-way, four-way traffic lights or give and take signage depending on the location and character of the road.

Chandler's Ford

Hampshire County Council appointed M Group Highway to carry out improvement works in Chandler’s Ford. The works involved the construction of flush dropped kerbs and informal crossing points at certain locations in winter 2025.

The construction works:

  • existing kerbstones to be removed
  • new kerbstones are installed at a lower height to create a smooth crossing point
  • resurfacing of the pavement area
  • installation of tactile paving at uncontrolled crossing points
Scheme Overview

The scheme aims to make it easier for pedestrians to get around Romsey and Chandlers Ford by adding informal crossing points. These include dropped kerbs with tactile paving along key routes. The focus is mainly on smaller junctions to improve accessibility. Currently, the lack of crossing points means pedestrians have to deal with high kerbs, which is difficult for people with pushchairs, limited mobility, wheelchairs, and mobility scooters. By making these changes, the scheme will greatly improve pedestrian facilities and ensure everyone can get around more easily.

Funding Arrangements
Funding for the transport capital delivery schemes is separate from the County Council’s revenue budget and savings proposals. In the majority of cases funding comes from external grants and / or Section 106 contribution from developers. This funding usually has conditions that strictly control on how, where and when it can be spent.
