Scheme Overview

Chestnut Avenue Bus Stop Changes

We want to make it easier and safer for students to get to Barton Peveril College by bus and on foot or by bike.

Why are we doing this?

  • there are more students going to the college now
  • at busy times, the road and pavements outside the college get crowded
  • some buses have to stop in the road because there isn’t enough space at the bus stops. This can make it harder for cars to pass and for people to cross safely.

What’s happening now?

  • the bus company, Bluestar, runs lots of buses just for the college students
  • Bluestar has bought even bigger buses because more students are using them
  • there isn’t enough space for all the buses to stop safely.

What changes are we planning?

  • build four new bus stop areas on the other side of the road to the college, so buses don’t block traffic
  • make the path near the college entrance wider so it’s easier and safer to walk
  • add a zebra crossing with a bike crossing next to it so crossing the road is safer
  • plant trees and bushes to make the area look nicer.

When will this happen?

  • we want to do the work on Chestnut Avenue when the college is closed (during holidays) so it causes less disruption.
Funding Arrangements
Funding for the transport capital delivery schemes is separate from the County Council’s revenue budget and savings proposals. In the majority of cases funding comes from external grants and / or Section 106 contribution from developers. This funding usually has conditions that strictly control on how, where and when it can be spent.
