Hitches Lane Pedestrian and Cycle Improvements

Supporting healthier lifestyle choices, making it safe and pleasant for all.

Last update: January 2025

Scheme overview

The proposed improvements for walking and cycling in Fleet will be implemented in two distinct phases and will provide connectivity between Elvetham Heath, Calthorpe Park School/Hart Leisure Centre and Church Crookham. Phase one has been prioritised due to its importance as a strategic active travel route and high usage by people walking and cycling.

Phase one of the project, from Elvetham Heath to Calthorpe Park School/Leisure Centre, is currently in the preliminary design stage. This phase aims to create a three-metre-wide shared use path along Hitches Lane, stretching from the Fleet Road/Elvetham Road roundabout to the junction of Dukes Mead. The primary objective is to enhance safety, comfort, and access for both pedestrians and cyclists.

Phase two of the project, currently in the concept design stage, aims to extend the route from Hitches Lane to Church Crookham and Crookham Park, linking it to the existing route to Fleet Town Centre. The objective is to introduce continuous footways on side road accesses, prioritise pedestrians and cyclists, and address the Basingstoke Canal crossing at Malthouse Bridge.

Proposals are being developed to provide an improved active travel route for people walking, wheeling, and cycling. A feedback survey will be going live with further information on the proposals on 30 September 2024. The County Council wants to install measures that the community will support, so your feedback is vital to help inform the development of the proposals.

Feedback Survey Closed

The feedback survey closed on 10 November 2024 at 11.59pm. You can still read the information pack.  We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all the comments and feedback we have received. The data from this engagement will now be analysed with a view to publishing a findings report.

Funding Arrangements
Funding for the transport capital delivery schemes is separate from the County Council’s revenue budget and savings proposals. In the majority of cases funding comes from external grants and / or Section 106 contribution from developers. This funding usually has conditions that strictly control on how, where and when it can be spent.
