The scheme will be undergoing detailed design and works are expected to start in 2026. Exact dates will be published here.

Hampshire County Council appointed Mildren to carry out night works on the A27 Oakhill and Long Lane junction. The works included resurfacing on the A27 Oakhill at its junction with Long Lane as well as the construction of a raised table to make it easier for pedestrians to cross Long Lane. The road markings were also repainted.

Scheme overview

The aim of this scheme is to improve cycle links in the area.  To provide a new cycle link between Portsmouth Road and Church Lane on the A27.  Please see the proposed scheme location and improvement plans.

It will connect to the Bursledon Road cycle link scheme which in turn links to existing cycle and pedestrian infrastructure (including Southampton City Council’s Cycle Network “SCN” route 3). A key aim of this scheme is to encourage people to leave the car at home and either walk, cycle or use public transport as a first choice of travel.

In March 2020, Hampshire County Council welcomed news of the successful outcome of a funding bids to the Department for Transport (DfT). Made jointly with Southampton City Council, Hampshire County Council made a bid for investment designed to improve walking, cycling and public transport within the Southampton City Region. The Department for Transport awarded £57 million to the Southampton City Region from the Transforming Cities Fund (TCF). This funding is for capital investment in infrastructure to support and encourage active and sustainable travel from the outlying residential areas to key economic areas nearer the City Centre. The majority of the investment is on corridors from Eastleigh, Bursledon and The Waterside/Totton in addition to transport and mobility hubs in Eastleigh and at Southampton Parkway.

Approval to progress with implementation of the scheme was given at the Executive Member for Environment and Transport Decision Day 27 January 2022.
