Twiggs Lane School Street Proposal

A proposal to create a safer and healthier active travel environment for families travelling to and from Marchwood C of E Infant School.

Last update: June 2026

Scheme Overview

The School Street proposal is linked to the A326 Major Improvement Scheme, a Hampshire County Council project aimed at improving the road infrastructure around Marchwood and Totton.

As part of the wider A326 Major Improvement Scheme, changes are proposed to how vehicles enter and leave Marchwood:

  • The current junction where Twiggs Lane (north side) meets the A326 would be closed.
  • A new junction would be constructed linking Hythe Road and the A326, just south-west of the Pilgrim Inn.
  • This new junction would become the main route into Marchwood, and Twiggs Lane (north) would no longer be open to through-traffic, although access will still be available for people walking, wheeling and cycling.
  • These changes are intended to improve traffic flow and safety for all road users.
A School Street is a road outside a school where motor traffic is temporarily restricted during school drop-off and pick-up times. The aim is to create a safer, healthier, and more pleasant environment for children and families to walk, cycle, scoot, or use a wheelchair / mobility aid on their journey to and from school.
Engagement Report

The local community was invited to share their views on a proposed School Street for Twiggs Lane in Marchwood. This proposal forms part of a wider plan to improve road safety and travel choices in the area.

The report summarises the key findings from the feedback survey, which ran from 15 September to 26 October 2025. You can still read the information pack. Feedback from this engagement will help shape the final design.

Funding Arrangements
Funding for the transport capital delivery schemes is separate from the County Council’s revenue budget and savings proposals. In the majority of cases funding comes from external grants and / or Section 106 contribution from developers. This funding usually has conditions that strictly control on how, where and when it can be spent.
