The funding, approved today by Hampshire County Council, will be made available to district and borough councils to develop local projects that support healthy ageing and increase physical activity among older residents.

Live Longer Better Hampshire is a partnership between the County Council and Energise Me. The programme helps older residents become more physically active, improving wellbeing and enabling people to maintain their independence as they age.

The investment builds on the success of an earlier grant programme launched in 2023. Achievements from the first phase include:

  • More than 230 Functional Fitness MOTs completed for older residents in order to identify changes in strength, balance, flexibility and stamina.
  • 36 new strength and balance classes launched across Hampshire.
  • New physical activity opportunities introduced in care homes and supported living settings.
  • Improved wellbeing and sustained participation in physical activity among participants.

Councillor Joanne Burton, Executive Member for Health and Wellbeing, Hampshire County Council, said: “We know that staying active as we get older can have a significant impact on our physical health, mental wellbeing and ability to live independently, yet in England 42% of people aged 75 and over are currently classed as physically inactive. This is why it is so important that we help residents access opportunities to improve their strength, balance and mobility.

“Through Live Longer Better Hampshire, we have already seen the difference local activities can make, helping older residents build confidence, stay connected to their communities and maintain their independence. This investment will build on that success, enabling our district and borough partners to expand proven initiatives and develop new opportunities that support people to age well and continue doing the things that matter most to them for longer.”

Under the new scheme, Hampshire’s district and borough councils will each be able to apply for grants of up to £20,000 to develop projects that encourage older people to move more, build strength and balance, and stay connected within their communities. Projects will be developed through local working groups, bringing together councils, health organisations, voluntary groups and residents to identify what works best in each area.

The programme supports Hampshire County Council’s ambition to improve healthy life expectancy, reduce health inequalities and help residents remain healthy, well and independent for as long as possible.
