Advance notice of road closures over May half-term to support Botley Bypass construction

Road users and Botley residents are being given advance notice of road closures needed to build a new roundabout at the junction of the A3051 and A334 - an integral part of the wider Botley Bypass project

Apr 13 2026

To connect the new roundabout to the existing road network, the road levels need to be raised by up to one metre. This means temporary closures on both the A334 and A3051 are needed to ensure the works can be carried out safely.

A signed diversion suitable for all vehicles, including HGVs and smaller vans, will be in place throughout.

Key information:

1.    A334 (Sherecroft Way to Hillsons Road)
Closed from 9pm Friday 22 May – 6am Bank Holiday Monday 25 May

2.    A3051 (YMCA Fairthorne Manor to its junction with A334)
Closed from 9pm Friday 22 May – 6am Monday 1 June

From 6am Monday 25 May: A334 reopens with 24/7 two-way temporary traffic lights between Sherecroft Way and Hillsons Road until 6am Monday 1 June. Temporary traffic lights will be manually operated 7am–7pm to help manage queues.

From 6am on Monday 1 June a new temporary layout will be in place, allowing traffic flow in all directions.

Whilst both road closures are in place, a signed diversion route using the A27, A32, A334, B2177, and B3354 will operate.  When the A334 reopens, a diversion of a reduced length using the A27, A32 and A334 will be in place. Pedestrian and cycle access will be maintained throughout.

The advice for motorists is to plan ahead and allow more time for travel, as there may be delays at busier times. During the works, clear signage will be in place, with closures and restrictions on smaller local roads to prevent traffic diverting onto routes that are not suitable.  To help with this, the following temporary closures and movement restrictions will be operating from 9pm Friday 22 May - 6am Monday 1 June (with local access maintained at all times.)

•       Wangfield Lane / Maddoxford Lane – road closure to prevent through traffic
•       Reading Room Lane – northbound – no access from A334
•       Chapel Lane – northbound – no access from A334
•       Lockhams Road – northbound – no access from A334

A spokesperson for Hampshire County Council said: “The road closures over the May half-term holidays are necessary to undertake major earthworks and road construction to safely connect the new route with the existing road network.

“We recognise that any road closure is inconvenient and are grateful for the patience of Botley residents and road users as we progress the bypass, which will ultimately ease congestion and improve travel in and around Botley.”

Hampshire County Council approved the bypass in January 2025. The scheme is due to complete in late summer next year. For more information and updates, visit the scheme’s webpages
