Helping us develop a quiz to engage people with ways to use up food in their homes and reduce any food waste

Hampshire Perspectives is the County Council's residents' forum
This report summarises key findings from the 33rd Hampshire Perspectives survey. The survey invited participants to answer a quiz about cooking and food as they would if they came across it on a website or in a magazine. The quiz gave tailored suggestions and hints and tips for using food at home, depending on the answers participants gave. Once they had finished the quiz, and been shown these suggestions, people completing it were then asked about the questions they had been asked, and how they felt about the quiz.
The survey was open from 4 to 18 June 2024, and was completed by 704 Hampshire Perspectives forum members. It was also circulated via Hampshire County Council’s internal Parents and Carers Network in order to increase the number of people with young(er) children participating. A further 44 responses were received from this group, and their feedback was included alongside views of the forum members.
Key findings were as follows:
- The area of food waste was important to almost all participants completing the survey: nearly half felt that the quiz would have some value, especially to an audience of young(er) adults.
- The quiz was felt to be easy to understand, short and snappy.
- However, feedback highlighted the challenge of speaking about this topic to people who feel they don’t waste food, and doing so in a way that feels relevant.
- There were also some specific issues for some respondents around tone, which could come over as patronising – especially for anyone brought up in the post-rationing era.
- Many participants felt the suggestions and quick wins were not new news, and were not particularly motivated to try them. Those that involved children’s activities or two people households did not always feel very realistic.
- It was also pointed out that some questions were difficult to answer, and in some instances the typology descriptions didn’t flow logically. Questions where participants were asked to rank different types of food were found to be particularly hard to answer.
Based on the survey feedback, the quiz wording has been revisited and questions amended to address the concerns raised. When launched, it will be specifically targeted at demographics who are known to produce a higher amount of food waste.
