Understanding what residents feel about cycle and car parking in Hampshire, to inform the new Parking Strategy.

Hampshire Perspectives is the County Council’s residents’ forum.

This report summarises key findings from the 37th Hampshire Perspectives survey. The survey focused on preferences and issues with car and cycle parking in Hampshire, with a view to informing the new Hampshire Parking Strategy.

The survey was open from Monday 16 to Monday 30 September 2024, with 1,045 panel members sharing their views.

Key findings were as follows:

Cycle parking

Main considerations when looking for cycle parking were:

  • safety and security
  • proximity to destination
  • availability of spaces

Sheffield stands were the preferred type of cycle parking for cyclists, predominantly sue to their ease of use.

Vehicle parking

Main considerations when looking for vehicle parking:

  • availability of spaces
  • security/ safety of parking
  • payment method
  • size/ width of spaces
  • cost of parking
  • proximity to destination
  • car park opening hours

Most respondents were able to pay for parking using an app or with a bank card or cash at a ticket machine. Less than half of respondents were able to pay using a phone to call or text. However, accessibility needs to be taken into consideration when choosing which options are offered.

Parking issues

The most frequently reported issue relating to parking was vehicles parking on pavements.

Most respondents agreed that it was important to enforce parking restrictions and were supportive of an increase in Penalty Charge Notices to improve parking compliance and cover the cost of administering the scheme.
