Trainee Building Surveyor

Mia Holdaway

I first joined Hampshire County Council (HCC) back in 2014, as an apprentice Building Surveyor having just left school. During this time, I have been greatly supported by my fellow colleagues as I progressed, first through college and then university.

I always knew I wanted a career in the construction industry, and I really liked the idea of an apprenticeship because it allowed me to learn whilst I studied. Being able to put into practice what I am learning as I go along really helped me with my course and suited my style of learning.

Over the years I have had the opportunity to work on a large variety of project at HCC. Which include re-roofs, science laboratory refurbishments, landscaping works, conversions, refurbishments, and recladding projects. Being able to see a project all the way through from beginning to end is very fulfilling. It also has given me the opportunity to work with a variety of different people such as contractors, mechanical and electrical engineers, building control officers, planning officers and ecology officers – to name just a few.

Since graduating from university, I have also been mentoring junior members of staff, alongside during my normal day to day surveying job. I find this role very fulfilling as it feels like I am giving back the same great support that I too was given a few years ago.

My current goal is to complete my APC in order to gain chartership with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.
