Mia Holdaway
Building Surveyor
I first joined Hampshire County Council (HCC) back in 2014, as an apprentice Building Surveyor having just left school. During this time, I have been greatly supported by my fellow colleagues as I progressed, first through college, then university and even now through my continued work place progression and my promotion to become a Senior Building Surveyor.
I always knew I wanted a career in the construction industry, and I really liked the idea of an apprenticeship because it allowed me to learn whilst I studied. Being able to put into practice what I am learning as I go along really helped me with my course and suited my style of learning. With the benefit of hindsight, I am very glad I pursued that route.
Over the years I have had the opportunity to work on a large variety of project at HCC. Which include re-roofs, science laboratory refurbishments, landscaping works, alterations, refurbishments, and recladding projects. Being able to see a project all the way through from beginning to end is very fulfilling. It also has given me the opportunity to work with a variety of different people such as contractors, mechanical and electrical engineers, building control officers, planning officers and ecology officers – to name just a few.
As my skill set has progressed, I have been able to mentor junior members of staff, alongside during my normal day to day surveying job. I find this role very fulfilling as it feels like I am giving back the same great support that I too was given a few years ago.
The consistent support and opportunities for career progression have strongly influenced my decision to continue working at HCC for as long as I have.
My current goal this year (2026) is to complete my Chartership with the CIOB.
