International Women in Engineering Day

This international campaign celebrates the amazing work that women engineers are doing and promotes engineering as a career, something we are passionate about.

Our engineers are involved in a range of important and innovative projects, working on existing buildings to ensure they are comfortable, with hot water, clean drinking water, and warm and cool with good ventilation, and looking at more sustainable ways of providing these services, such as the use of ground source heat pumps and solar panels.

In recognition of International Women in Engineering Day, hear from two of our engineers, Tracey and Fung-Yin, who explain more about their roles, what they are working on, and why they love what they do:

Tracey, Mechanical Design Engineer:
“My area includes making sure end-users are warm and cool with good ventilation.

“In recent months, I have facilitated the changeover of older, oil-fired boilers with new more efficient models in schools, which obviously helps the environment and lessens the costs for the schools in fuel consumption.

“Going forward, I am looking into more sustainable ways of providing all mechanical building services, however this must be balanced with reasonable costings and the logistics of installing new technologies into existing buildings.

“A lot of Hampshire County Council’s building portfolio have had extensions attached here and there over the years which makes it difficult to find room to fit ground source heat pumps or solar panels, but we all like a challenge!”

Fung-Yin, Senior Structural Engineer:
“I have worked as a structural engineer for over 20 years. My current role at the County Council is varied and can involve site visits, designing building structures to suit the end-user, whilst adhering to relevant standards and codes, checking if work on site has been carried out according to the design intent, and answering site queries whenever they get raised.

“I believe the reason I love engineering is the purity of logic and scientific truth that needs to be applied when designing, the focus and the awareness that is needed for the role, and the satisfaction of producing something beneficial that could be as small as the palm of your hand or as big as a skyscraper.

“Currently I am in the middle of working on the relocation of a library. The work involves reviewing an existing building structure and designing the modifications and additional structures required for the building to serve as a new library space. It will be satisfying to see the new library finished and to see in action the services that a library would typically offer.”
