Did you know that our Engineers work on a range of diverse and exciting projects, from award-winning buildings, to energy saving programmes across our county’s schools and Hampshire County Council’s corporate estate?
Energy programmes such as replacing lighting with LEDs (Light Emitting Diode). To date, 40 projects have been completed across the corporate estate plus 23 schools throughout the county. With savings of over £300,000 and more than 900 tonnes of carbon annually, this programme is providing a significant contribution to the reduction of the Council’s carbon emissions, and with more projects in the pipeline, will continue to play a part in Hampshire’s Climate Emergency response.
An integral part of our Property Services’ multi-disciplinary team, our Engineers also work on award-winning projects such as The Lookout at Lepe Country Park, a beach-side restaurant which was recognised by no fewer than four awards in 2019. The project won a Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) award and a New Forest National Park Design Award. The Engineers who worked on the Lepe project were involved in designing complex structural solutions for a building situated on the beach and set into the cliffs.
Oakmoor School, in Whitehill and Bordon, is in the running for a RIBA Award this year and was shortlisted in the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Social Impact Awards 2020. This project brought together skills from across our Engineering team of Structural, Mechanical and Electrical engineers and included energy saving initiatives such as the installation of a Photovoltaic system providing 10% of the building’s energy use, glazing installed to maximise the use of daylight, and dimmable, daylight linked lighting.
Engineering campaigns throughout the year, such as International Women in Engineering Day (IWED) on 23 June, are the perfect opportunity to shine the spotlight on some of our engineering team. This IWED we will be showcasing a couple of our Structural Engineers, Senior Structural Engineer, Siew-Ping and Assistant Structural Engineer, Francisca.
Siew-Ping chose Structural Engineering as a career because: “...it allows me to apply science and maths in a very creative field. Allowing innovation and fresh thinking.” Francisca loves: “Seeing the projects come to life…working on some fantastic projects which have provided additional support to local communities.”
