Ask governors to review an exclusion

Governors can review permanent exclusion and suspension decisions

It is part of a governor's role to review permanent exclusions and suspensions.

You can ask governors to review an exclusion decision by writing to the Clerk to Governors at the school as soon as possible after you get the exclusion letter.

All permanent exclusions must be reviewed by the governors. The following table outlines the process for suspensions:

Length of suspension Governors meeting deadline What you need to do
0 - 5 days in a term No deadline Provide information, but you do not have to be invited to the meeting.
5.5 - 15 days in a term 50 school days You must come to the meeting or write down what you want to say.
15.5 days or more in a term 15 school days You must be invited to the meeting. This is a long-fixed GDC.

When governors meet to review an exclusion, this may be as part of a wider governors meeting, or as a formal Governors Discipline Committee (GDC) meeting.
